The Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS) and Danida have the pleasure of inviting you to a public meeting with the Minister for Development Cooperation Christian Friis Bach on:

Millennium Development Goals, Economic Growth
and Rights-based development

Monday, 20 February 2012, 14.00-17.00
Landstingssalen
Danish Parliament
Christiansborg Palace

Meet the Minister for Development Cooperation Christian Friis Bach for a dynamic debate with leading practitioners and researchers in the field. The seminar forms part of the process of preparing Denmark’s new development strategy.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) serve as a guidepost for Danish Development Cooperation. On a positive note, there has been tremendous progress in school enrolment, the goal of halving number of people without access to clean water has almost been reached and child mortality has decreased throughout the world. However, other areas still lag behind.

The Minister for Development finds the work for and with rights crucial to successful Danish development cooperation. Rights are therefore expected to be central to the new strategy for Danish development cooperation.

But what does a rights-based approach to development mean? How can a rights-based approach contribute to economic growth? And how can economic growth contribute to the fulfillment of the MDGs? Can rights play a more offensive role in the fulfillment of the UN MDGs after 2015?

The seminar will be focused on the question of how rights can be a driving force in development, and through a dynamic debate the seminar will deal with the relations between the MDGs, economic growth and a rights-based approach.
